210. French Girl: Violette Hat

Knitting, project 210. Completed 12/12/2009

As other members of Ravelry have noted, the pattern works up quickly, but too small as written. I, too, had to rip back the first attempt — the size L hat fit 19-inch head but was too short as written.

PATTERN
Adapted from Violette pattern by Kristeen Griffin-Grimes

MADE FOR
Charity

SIZE
M-L (fits 19-inch head)

MATERIALS
Yarn: About 62.1 yds (2.5 oz) of super chunky yarn
1 skein — Rowan Big Wool (100% Merino Wool), 100g / 3.5 oz, 87 yds. Color 25: Wild Berry
Also 1.5 yards of 3/4-inch wide velvet ribbon in chocolate brown

Knitting Needles:
US Size 17 (12 mm) double-pointed needles (DPN)

GAUGE
2 sts and 3 rows = 1″ in St st
(pattern gauge was 2 sts and 2 rows/inch)

NOTES
Size 17 (12 mm) are not that comfortable to hold (too large), but they work well with the yarn, which is just yummy to knit with.

1st attempt: too short! Had to rip back — size L hat fit 19-inch head but was too short as written.

Added a cable repeat and 3 rounds before decreasing for a total of 25 rounds:
– Work rounds 1 to 11 as written.
– Insert 4 new rounds: Work 1 cable round (same as round 4) and knit 3 rounds.
– Round 12 (now round 16): Continue pattern as written for rounds 12 to end.
