274. Preemie Hat with Flower

Crochet, project 274. Completed 10/22/2010

A cute hat to teach basic concepts

Adapted from instructions on The Crafty Tortoise blog and  Kristin Spurklund’s book, Crochet from the Heart: Quick Projects for Generous Giving.

Sample project for Crochet 201 class to demo several techniques

Preemie/Baby – 3.5″ crown diameter and 5 inches long. Fits up to a 14-inch head

Gauge: 4 sc per inch

Yarn: 0.8 oz, 51 yds worsted weight yarn in main color, plus small amount of pink yarn for flower

  • 1 ball Cascade Superwash Quatro (100% Superwash Wool). 3.5 oz / 100 g. 220 yds. Color: #1930, Lime.

Crochet Hook: US Size G-7 (4.5 mm)

Tip: When the crown is the right diameter, count the number of increase rounds (8). Work the same number of rounds without increasing: Work 8 rounds of sc. Hat is about 3.5 inches long and will end just above the ears. To make the hat cover the ears, work 1.5 times the number of increase rounds or 8 x 1.5 = 12 rounds
